Explore the art of storytelling, narrative structure, character function and creation with successful playwright Paul Kalburgi. This workshop will challenge you and arm you with tips, tricks, and exercises to aid your writing process.
Sometimes, it’s useful to take a step back from writing, especially if a play is beginning to feel forced or sluggish. Instead, think about topping-up your inspiration and shifting your focus! This practical workshop focuses simply on the doing - a roadmap for the craft of writing and re-writing your play.
In this inspiring and interactive workshop, British playwright and screenwriter Paul Kalburgi will share a plethora of exercises and activities, designed for playwrights of all levels, including those who are new to the craft. Participants will leave feeling energised and motivated to write, armed with a host of new go-to tips and tricks which can be applied to any work-in-progress; or used as a jumping-off point for a new piece of work.
During the day you will explore exercises covering the art of storytelling, narrative structure, character function, the creation of dialogue and the importance of considering your arena as a character. Plus;

We'll take an hour's lunch break in the middle of the day so please bring your lunch and enjoy mingling with other course-goers.
Paul Kalburgi is an award-winning British playwright, screenwriter and TV producer living in Auckland, New Zealand. In 2015 Paul was awarded Master of Arts (Writing for Screen & Stage) with distinction by Regent’s University, London. He was also the recipient of the Postgraduate Student Prize.
Select playwriting credits include; In The Tall Grass (Bishop Arts Theatre Center, Dallas), winner of the Dallas Critics Forum Award 2018 for best play, Maxine (Stockwell Playhouse, London & Time Square Art Center, New York), Almost The Birthday Party (Etcetera Theatre, London) published by Lazy Bee Scripts, MCN TV (Brockley Jack Theatre, London), Tickled Pink! (Battersea Barge, London), Jack & The Beanstalk (Touring, UK & Ireland), and The Countess (Blue Elephant Theatre, London). Paul’s backstage musical comedy, Broadway or Bust (book, music, and lyrics), will receive its world premiere production in August 2019 at the Bath House Cultural Center, Dallas, produced by Pegasus Theatre. He is currently working on another new musical, Vegas With A V (book and lyrics) - a collaboration with Kevan Frost (Tony Award, Olivier Award and Drama Desk Award-nominated composer of Taboo, West End & Broadway).
For screen, Paul has most recently been writing for the second season of The Price of Fame (REELZ Channel). His short film Healing (Revelation/Genesis TV) picked up the award for Best Song (music and lyrics) at the 2018 Concrete Dream Film Festival in LA. As producer, since 2007 Paul has worked on a range of shows across multiple genres, including; factual entertainment, lifestyle, news, celebrity reality and even a stint in TV shopping. Most notably, he created the 2010 British celebrity ob-doc series Lauren Harries: Working 9-5 for Showcase TV.
Alongside his own writing projects, Paul continues to facilitate playwriting courses and workshops as a teaching artist in theatres and educational institutions in the USA, UK, and NZ. He is currently writing a resource book based on his popular workshops, to be published internationally next summer.
