    Description

Join us for this basic beginners introduction to Zoom, suitable for new users and those who need a bit of extra information. To join this course, you'll need a computer or ipad that has a working camera and microphone. If you already use your device for video chats (eg Facetime, Skype, Facebook Messenger) then you'll know your camera and microphone work. Smartphones can also be used but the small screen size will make it harder to see details. The day before the course starts, your tutor will email you a website link to join the course.  Just click on this link a little before the time of the course and follow the instructions to join the class. Allow yourself 10 minutes for this process if you've never done it before. If you arrive in the course early, you will be directed to an online 'waiting room' until the tutor enters the course.  If you would prefer to be more prepared, read the instructions at the bottom of this page.
This course is free for all students.

    What we cover:
    • using different devices (eg tablet, smartphone, computer) and the limitations of each device
    • joining via web browser versus downloading the Zoom app to your device
    • meetings - joining, scheduling and inviting participants (in case you'd like to use zoom yourself for meeting friends)
    • Zettique (Zoom etiquette) - muting, attracting the teacher's attention, showing your face
    • being aware of your own background
    • creating a custom background
    • tools teachers might use: whiteboard, document sharing, breakout rooms
    • pointer to some other resources of interest (eg presenting yourself well on zoom, lighting etc)
    • dealing with technical issues during a class
    • cameras, earphones
    • settings
    • reactions
    • managing class resources

    Zoom info

Your tutor will directly email you an internet link for the meeting the day before the course.

It is not essential, but your experience will be improved if you download the Zoom software (app) to your computer or ipad before the course starts. If you want to do this, visit the zoom website zoom.us.  On the top right hand corner of their home page, click the down arrow in the 'resources' menu. Select the option 'download the zoom client' and follow their instructions.

If you don't download the zoom client, you will be prompted to do this when you first click on the meeting link. This process takes about 5-10 minutes so allow yourself extra time.

You'll need to have a functioning camera and microphone within your device.  If you are able to use your device for Facetime or Messenger two-way video chats, then you know these already work. When you click on the link to join the zoom course, the software will guide you through testing your camera and microphone. This takes 1-2 minutes.

    Testimonials

"I am S. from Rutherford College. I have been attending a few zoom classes since lockdown and your session has been the best so far! You were super organised and very clear. You managed to cover quite a bit in a short time but it was not rushed. You are an educator and that made all the difference. Do consider conducting an advance level zoom class. I would also be very keen on attending classes on how to use zoom to teach English etc. Teaching on-line is a different ball game! Really enjoyed the session. Do let me know when you have other workshops, I would love to attend.  Selwyn great job in putting this together and choosing an educator to deliver it. Made all the difference. Thanks too for making it free!  Do run this again. I will let my friends know.  Take care. Sincerely, S". 9 May
