Join Nancy November from the School of Music at the University of Auckland to learn about the life and times of two great composers.
Learn how the politics of the times impacted on their music, and about how the composers took up social ideas and ideals in their works. During the course you will have the opportunity to listen to their music and gain a deeper understanding of the influences and nuances in well-known and lesser-known works of these composers.
Nancy is offering two workshops during 2021. On 22 May, Beethoven and Berlioz will be explored. On 26 June, Haydn and Mozart will be the subjects. Enrol for both and access a course discount.
Each session will include biographical background and cultural history to set the composers in context. There will be an opportunity to listen to and study at least two works in detail in each session. Music will be chosen to introduce lesser-studied works of the composers in question, as well as to enhance understanding of well-known repertoire, from new angles.
All those interested in deepening their knowledge of classical music and European culture around 1800.
Nancy November is an Associate Professor of Music at the University of Auckland. She holds a PhD in musicology from Cornell University and has written four books about music and culture in Beethoven's era.
