The Waikato Wars

    Join historian David hill on this fascinating one day coach trip to the Waikato following the path of the British Army during the Land Wars. We will stop to visit a number of military redoubts - Pokeno, Whangamarino, and Pirongia and survey battle sites including Rangiriri and Oraakau, and we will visit the church at Rangiaowhia. During the journey we will discuss the use of boats by the British and cannon by Maaori, compare policies and consider outcomes.

    Description

    Join historian David hill on this fascinating one day coach trip to the Waikato following the path of the British Army during the Land Wars. We will stop to visit a number of military redoubts - Pokeno, Whangamarino, and Pirongia and  survey battle sites including Rangiriri and Oraakau, and we will visit the church at Rangiaowhia. During the journey we will discuss the use of boats by the British and cannon by Maaori, compare policies and consider outcomes.

    Understanding the causes and effects of the Waikato War is an advantage in understanding the need for, and processes of, the Waitangi Tribunal.

    About your tour guide

    David is a historian and published author, who grew up in the Waikato, but whakapapas to Tai Tokerau. 

    What to bring

    Comfortable clothing and walking shoes. Stops will be made for comfort and refreshments. Bring your own lunch and water. This tour will depart from, and return to, Selwyn College in Kohimarama, Auckland.
