    Home Garlic Basket in Cane

    Weave a traditional hanging garlic basket from cane. Cane is a flexible, versatile material that needs little or no storage or preparation. Learn traditional weaving skills of twining, joining, coiling and whipping cane. These are intricate, traditional skills - once learned, you can make larger baskets for shallots, onions and chillies.

    Description

    From tutor Nicola: I am a weaver of many materials, such as cane, willow, seagrass and bark. I like to share my skills and encourage others to make and weave useful household items.

    Learning outcomes from this workshop:

    • learn about the growing and manufacture of cane
    • learn how to weave using a pairing stroke
    • learn how to make a cane ring, to hand up the basket
    • learn the skills of whipping.
    • once you know these skills you can apply them to larger projects

    Who should attend?

    Adults wanting to learn some cane weaving skills. You will need nimble hands.

    What to bring

    Your lunch. A pair of household scissors and a water sprayer.
