After a brief look at the history and contemporary development of botanical illustration, some basic plant anatomy will be explored. Flower structures and leaf shapes will be examined with the 'naked eye' as well as under a microscope. Exercises on observational drawing will be set, encouraging you to experiment with a range of drawing tools, such as pencils, charcoal, pastel and watercolours. You will create a variety of works from the delicate small study to a larger gestural piece. From June 2017 Sandra will also teach the dry-brush technique to participants.

Who should attend? Botanists, students, anyone keen on gardening, artists looking for a new form of expression. A materials list will be sent upon enrolment. This will include watercolour paints, brushes, colour pencils and paper.
Sandra Morris studied botanical and wildlife illustration at Newcastle University, NSW, Australia and was visiting artist at the Auckland Botanic Gardens, Manurewa for 6 weeks in January 2013.

Paints - Preferably Winsor & Newton/Cotman - 6 - 8 colours, Faber Castell Polychromos (colour pencils) - 12 particular colours, solvent blender, paper (1 high quality and some cheaper for testing/trialling/drawing, fibre tip pen, Indian ink, embossing tool, brushes - 3, liquid masking fluid. pencils, scalpel or craft knife, ruler, palette, eraser, rags, magnifying glass, jar.
