Taught by bestselling New Zealand author Stephanie Johnson, this course is an introduction to writing the much-loved genre of historical fiction.
Attention will be paid to narrative and the main features of the genre. We will also discuss the necessity for solid research; the differences between historical fiction and history itself, as well as what distinguishes popular from literary historical fiction.
Participants will engage in writing exercises not only to develop understanding of character and periods, but also vibrancy and intimacy in style.
You are invited to attend our opening address at 9am on Saturday 17 October 2020. Carole Beu from the Women's Bookshop will fire up the day with an early morning talk on her raves and faves. Have a cuppa, listen to Carole and meet others.
"I attended Family Stories to Fiction in 2016 armed with some interesting family tales and a desire to somehow make these stories accessible for future generations. The information and skills that Stephanie shared made the course a really worthwhile experience. The idea of using real historical figures and events as the basis for fiction is a novel way of bringing our ancestors to life. Her feedback on my homework gave me the confidence to start this writing adventure." Helen C
