    This six week course will cover the foundations of psychology, as well as the major theories associated with a number of branches of the subject - biological psychology, social psychology, cognition and perception, developmental psychology and health psychology.

    Description

    About Introduction to Psychology

    Participants will be given the opportunity to openly discuss theories, as well as draw on personal experience to relate the theories to everyday life situations. Sessions will be supplemented with related videos of interest, as well as case studies.

    Session 1: Foundations of psychology - Wundt, Pavlov and conditioning, Freud and psychoanalysis, Rogers person-centred counselling and evolutionary psychology.

    Session 2: Biological psychology - the functioning of the brain

    Session 3: Social psychology - how individuals behave in social situations including theories of attitude and persuasion, attraction theory and prejudice.

    Session 4: Cognition and perception - how we perceive/register the world around us eg depth, memory, cultural influences.

    Session 5: Developmental pyschology: cognitive and social development in infants and children, development theorists Piaget and Bowlby.

    Session 6: Health psychology - application of psychology theory to physical health, biopsychosocial model of health, behavioural changes theories, influence of stress on physical health.

    Who should attend?

    Who should attend: Individuals with an interest in the study of psychology, with little or no background knowledge.
