    Description

Learn to make precious simple folded and stitched books with paste paper covers. These books make ideal special gifts, especially for special occasions such as graduations, births, baptisms, anniversaries.

The course will start with making simple creative paste paper covers - this involves mixing colour acrylic paints with wallpaper paste and painting abstract shapes on paper, then combing patterns on the wet paint. Paste paper is one of the oldest decorated papers used by bookbinders and can be found in books that are centuries old. Sandra will then demonstrate and guide students with folding and cutting pages, then stitching inside pages and covers together using linen thread. Sandra will demonstrate two types of books.  These are ideal for decorating inside pages with small objects such as prized postage stamps, small leaves, pressed petals, small drawings or other precious small-scale items. This creates wide scope for personal creativity and customisation. You'll make and take home two small precious books.

    Expected learning outcomes

    • Confidence in creatively applying paint in an abstract way and making patterns
    • Confidence in folding accurately
    • Confidence in skillfully stitching books and covers together
    • Extended creativity in thinking about internal content for small scale

    What to bring

    • Small craft knife with snapable blades (very sharp blades are needed for good results)
    • Eraser
    • Steel ruler between 40cm - 60cm in length
    • HB pencil
    • Any special fancy papers you may wish to include in your book (not essential - we're providing papers)

    • An old credit card or stiff loyalty card to be cut up to make a comb
    • Your lunch - we'll provide tea and coffee in the staff room

    Who should attend?

Any book lover, teachers, librarians, crafters or artists looking for a new form of expression. Suitable for total beginners.

    From tutor Sandra:

I have a life-long interest in books, whether they be children's picture books, nature journals or precious bindings. I love these simple book-binding techniques as they are easy to produce and are inexpensive to make.  They can hold beautiful stamp sets, precious leaves or petals, small drawings and make the perfect gift.
