    Description

Join Nancy November from the School of Music at the University of Auckland to learn about the life and times of two great composers.

Learn how the politics of the times impacted on their music, and about how the composers took up social ideas and ideals in their works. During the course you will have the opportunity to listen to their music and gain a deeper understanding of the influences and nuances in well-known and lesser-known works of these composers.

Nancy is offering two workshops during 2022. On 22 May, Beethoven and Berlioz will be the subjects.  On 27 August, Haydn and Mozart will be explored. For each of these courses, register two participants on your order, and we'll change only one course fee.

    Course outline

Each session will include biographical background and cultural history to set the composers in context. There will be an opportunity to listen to and study at least two works in detail in each session. Music will be chosen to introduce lesser-studied works of the composers in question, as well as to enhance understanding of well-known repertoire, from new angles.

    Expected learning outcomes

    • Study the lives and culture milieus of two famous composers
    • Find out how their music reflects the politics and society of their times
    • Learn what to listen for, and how to listen, for a deeper understanding of their music.

    Who should attend?

All those interested in deepening their knowledge of classical music and European culture around 1800.

    About the tutor
