This project invites you to try a variety of applique techniques using both hand and machine stitching (though it could be adapted for use by hand- or machine-stitching alone) with discreet beading to add to the surface texture.
The pattern is built using up to four different applique techniques and one or two colours of Angelina. You will exploit the transparency of the Angelina and the effect which different colours of background fabric can have on the Angelina colour.
Take design and decorative inspiration from Indian collages of vintage embroideries. The intermingling of bold design and the patching of differently stitched sections of clothing patched together with bold couched fabric lines over the joins give the distinctive style of an Indian collage.
For 2022, there are four weekends of workshops. These can be attended separately, or you can begin to build a real breadth of contemporary textile and mixed media skills by attending as many as possible. Anyone with an enthusiasm for textile and mixed media arts, from beginner to experienced.
I am an internationally acknowledged artist, curator, tutor and author who loves to share my experimental and improvisational approaches. I specialise in a range of unusual materials such as metals, paper, wire and paint, and not for nothing is my blog called ‘Alysnsburntofferings’ as my techniques include burning, hammering, patinating and distressing (amongst others). Stitching and embellishing are not forgotten and are used freely and expressively. Designs and inspiration are often drawn from natural patterns and textures in addition to a fascination with the history and context of materials and techniques.
