Think Talk: Trial by Podcast: A new frontier in media influence.
Tuesday, 16th May 2023 7.30pm - 8.30pm
Dr Matt Mollgaard will look at the extraordinary impact podcasts are having on the judicial process. Why are podcasts successful where the justice system was not? Why are convictions happening as a result of a podcast?
The 2022 conviction of Chris Dawson in Australia for the murder of his wife Lynette in 1982 was a remarkable resurrection of a cold case that would never have happened if not for the podcast The Teacher’s Pet by Hedly Thomas of The Australian. Echoing the earlier podcast sensation Serial, Thomas’ podcast forced a public and judicial re-engagement with a decades-old crime, through a dogged retracing of the facts and examinations of the fictions, that led to an
outcome the creators had desired. Why were podcasts successful where the justice system was not? What can The Teacher’s Pet tell us about podcasting as a new frontier of media influence?
Note: Listening to at least one episode of The Teacher’s Pet is recommended to get the most out of this session.
