    Think Talk: Kids and Screens: The State of Play

    Lead Speaker: Julie Cullen, Paediatric Physiotherapist, Te Whatu Ora

    Dr Alex Müntz, Research Fellow, Ophthalmology, Auckland University

    Dr Samantha Marsh, Research Fellow, Public Health, Auckland University

    About the Speakers:

    Julie Cullen: Julie is a paediatric physiotherapist and has worked for 20 years in New Zealand hospitals. She became interested in the health impacts of screen use in children and adolescents both from her clinical work, and after hearing similar concerns from other health professionals. Julie is currently completing post-graduate study through Auckland University of Technology. 

    Dr Marsh: Samantha is a senior research fellow in the School of Population Health at the University of Auckland. Samantha became interested in developmental science after becoming a parent, and through this developmental science lens she explores the impact of screens on child health, behaviour, emotional wellbeing and relationships. screens while avoiding their negative impacts.

    Dr Müntz: Alex is a research fellow in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Auckland, with training in optometry and vision science. As a clinical scientist, his research focus is on dry eye disease and the relationship between screen use, blinking and ocular health in adults and youth.

    Julie Cullen will present a review of research of the impacts of screen use on the health, wellbeing and educational outcomes of children and youth (tamariki and rangatahi) in New Zealand.  She will look at benefits and risks, and evidence-based tips on how to get the best out of educational technology.  She will be joined by Dr Alex Müntz from the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Auckland and Dr Samantha Marsh from the School of Population Health at the University of Auckland.  Dr Samantha Marsh will discuss current issues in screen research, and how teens can find balance with social media.
