Think Talk: Ordinary women, extraordinary lives: Embracing new ways of living in older adulthood
Tuesday, 19th September 2023 7.30pm - 8.30pm
This presentation reflects on the results of research on older women’s experiences of gendered inequality across the life span. There is considerable scholarship that draws attention to the marginalisation, if not exclusion, faced by women, especially in their older years. But our research revealed a different story. Life history interviews with women aged 65 and older revealed stories of hope and resilience; emergent relationships, both with themselves and others; and new-found freedoms that allowed them to live their lives in a different register. We argue that our life history method – understanding the older years in the context of a full, lived life – enabled a more nuanced and culturally specific story to emerge.
