    Home Making Soap

    Learn about cold process soap making, colouring, fragrance, chemistry of soap making and designing your own recipes. You'll learn, and practice, and get to take home soaps and a mould.

    Description

    Following on from the popularity of our weekend soap-making courses, expert soap-maker Jackie Ziegler is now offering a more detailed version of the weekend workshop.

    Course outline

    • Evening one: Basics of soap making. Equipment and ingredients. Cold process technique. Practical session: Natural Castile Soap
    • Evening two: Fragrancing your soap. Different types of colourants used in soap making. Practical session: Colouring your soap
    • Evening three: How does soap work? Chemistry of soap making. Practical session: Swirling technique 1
    • Evening four: How to create your own recipes. Properties of different oils. Calculating the lye amount. Practical session: Swirling technique 2

    All materials and ingredients are included in the fee. Included is a silicon loaf mould, which makes 400 ml soap, about four 100 g bars or eight small guest soaps. You'll get to take this home with you. Students will make a small loaf of soap during each of the four evenings. They will also receive four different soap recipes that they can keep on using after the course.  Course materials value $50.

    Expected learning outcomes

    We expect that students will gain knowledge about:

    • equipment and material used in soap making
    • cold process soap making technique
    • how to use fragrances and essential oils in soap
    • different types of colourants used in soap making
    • how soap works
    • chemistry of soap making
    • what is saponification
    • properties of different oils
    • creating your own recipes
    • calculating the lye amount
    • the role of water in the process
    • making a natural castile soap
    • using different oils and fats in a recipe
    • two different swirling techniques

    About your tutor

    Jacqueline, having worked in IT for many years, decided to follow her passion for crafts, in particular soap-making. She has been making soaps and body products for more than 20 years. Jacqueline loves teaching and regularly gets positive feedback on her courses. She has been teaching soap-making through private classes and community classes for nearly 10 years.
