    Description

"Art teaches one to turn ones full intelligence on a problem, to think creatively, originally and constructively instead of defensively and evasively"

This eight week course introduces young art students to fine art drawing (as opposed to craft) where the student is exposed to a wide range of mediums including lead pencils, ink, charcoal, eraser, pastel and pen. The classes are practical and fun, whilst still teaching art in a disciplined and nurturing environment. Students doodle, draw from observation, from photographic reference, as a preliminary sketch and as an end in itself. Emphasis is placed on thinking visually, developing looking skills and teaching the basic principles of art, such as line, tone and composition. Students are trained to look and re-look, to draw the thing itself, the space around/ negative space, using a continuous line, without looking at their page/ blind drawing until their eyes are trained and they see the thing they are drawing and not an idea of it. Braveness is needed to make a drawing. One has to be prepared for failure, and this may be public, the trick is to view these attempts as learning and accumulate knowledge into a more determined effort. Students are engaged through object-based learning, which develops critical-thinking skills and fosters an appreciation for the visual arts. There is no substitute for access to original works of art in achieving this goal and I encourage my students to visit galleries and view original art works. I teach students about the history of art and contemporary art through their practice and teach them to think creatively, problem solve, and to work collaboratively and independently.

I keep my students informed about the local art scene. Where possible, we work on projects that take us outside of the studio to work en plein air.

Each term, we will change the syllabus so that children who join again continue to be challenged and extended. Art materials are included in the enrolment fee.  For children 6-12 years old.
