Beat boredom this school holidays while doing something meaningful in our 5-day programme to inspire and engage kids 8 - 12 years. Get Real provides fun ways for kids to understand relevant social topics and enjoy making positive changes in the world and in the lives of others.
Today's cause: Care of our local environment
Today's programme will kick off with an inspirational talk (speaker to be advised).
Following our inspirational speaker, Sarah Robinson of Little Ferns (https://littleferns.co.nz/) will lead the children in having fun learning about the traditional uses of plants. We’ll head out on a short bush walk (weather-dependent) to discover which native plants would come in handy in a survival situation. We’ll play some games to find traditional plant cures for a variety of common illness and first aid situations. We’ll cut and prepare some harakeke for some simple weaving projects and children will plant some harakeke seeds to take home.
About Sarah: Sarah has worked as a teacher and environmental education specialist for over 15 years. As an education advisor for the Auckland Botanic Gardens, she creates fun, interactive, school holiday programmes and activities for children that inspire them to connect with nature.
Later in the day, Kimberley from Let's Make it Green will run a workshop teaching children how to make beeswax wraps. Everyone will take home one of these useful kitchen aids and an appreciation of the need to minimise single-use plastics in our environment.
