    Description

You’ve seen Netflix ‘The Queen’s Gambit’? You’ve heard something about explosion of chess interest in schools and online? Well, let Nigel Metge, President of NZ Chess Federation, introduce you to the mysteries of chess.

It doesn’t matter if you know nothing or know a lot - there is something for everyone in this course. We will have fun learning how to play if you don’t know or how to improve if you do. And what’s happening in NZ and the world today in chess.

Everyone should leave the course a bit fascinated with chess and with a ‘Pawn Certificate’ giving you a confident start in a lifelong recreation.

    Expected learning outcomes

    • Learn some opening, middle and end game strategies and tactics
    • Learn how to identify and implicate check mating patterns
    • Learn from a study of past Grandmaster games and enquire about various lines of play
    • How to use puzzles to help improve and get into the habit of deeper analysis
    • By the end of the course you'll have a greater understanding of important areas and branches of play which will altogether make you a better decision maker over the chess board

    Who should attend?

Those who are new or relatively new to chess and want to learn the basics. Those who'd like to start playing chess at home or a club and want to build confidence first.

    Testimonials

I liked games of chess after learning new tactics. I enjoyed much more than I expected. Got to play with other players and solve puzzles. I enjoyed the mix of instruction, demonstration of masters' games and playing. The classes were enlivened by the friendly, open tutoring style. 2019
