    Description

Expect these classes to be the start of an obsession. Dip into a selection of media, experiment, then produce an artwork using your new textile and mixed media skills. Work with fabrics and papers, in stitch and in beads to make creative art. You will learn to view almost anything as a creative tool, including a sewing machine, hammers, candles and more!

This is a course for beginners and improvers alike led by an internationally experienced artist and author.

In this exciting and innovative mixed media workshop you will experiment with ways to use heat, flame and stitch to produce exciting colours, textures and patterns on various materials. You will explore ways to manipulate these to create richly coloured, textured and embellished surfaces and forms that can be used to create 2D journal covers, wall-hangings, or 3D forms, such as vessels, jewellery or sculpture.

Use the distinctive properties of Lutradur, Tyvek and Angelina. Learn how to colour them and to apply heat to manipulate and distress their surfaces and forms to create rich textural surfaces suitable for stitch and further embellishment. Then learn how to use machine sewing techniques and add hand stitch and wire embellishments. With guidance from Alysn, you will apply some simple design considerations to create personalised designs for artwork in your preferred form.

    About your tutor

I love to share my experimental, improvisational approaches and am an internationally acknowledged artist, curator, tutor and author. I specialise in a range of unusual materials such as metals, paper, wire and paint, and not for nothing is my blog called ‘Alysnsburntofferings’ as my techniques include burning, hammering, patinating and distressing (amongst others). Stitching and embellishing are not forgotten and are used freely and expressively. Designs and inspiration are often drawn from natural patterns and textures in addition to a fascination with the history and context of materials and techniques.
