    Course outline

The course will commence with a focus on whakawhanaungatanga – getting to know each other with an emphasis on our own artistic point of view or creativity goals.

We will learn and have a go with the following techniques:

    • Creating atmosphere with layers (mountain range technique)
    • Painterly techniques in gelatin plate printing
    • Magazine resist technique
    • Creating texture using stencils, stamps, posca pens and found objects

We are working towards one final art piece we can plan and complete and be proud of to take home as a keepsake of what we have learned. At the end of the day, you'll take home your own gelli plate (8x10").

    Expected learning outcomes

    • Know how to gelli print!
    • Creative play/exercises to unleash creativity
    • Gain insight into your design style and hone your ideas
    • Experience with techniques such as image resist, layering, stamping etc

    Who should attend?

This course will be enjoyed by individuals with a confident eye for colour art and design, as well as complete beginners for whom exploring creativity is a new interest. A positive uplifting and encouraging atmosphere is fostered in this class.

    What to bring

Bring your lunch. Most materials are provided for the course but we would like students to bring black and white photocopies of special photographs (ones that you are interested in honouring). These could be very old photographs of your tūpuna/ancestors or an important place to you, or a church, marae or building that is important to you. It could also be a photograph of yourself from your childhood. Or, a photo of your pet! If you can't easily print your images, please email them to the office and we will arrange this (info@selwyncomed.school.nz). Please do not bring the originals on the day because we will not be able to utilise originals for our project.

Also bring some magazines, wrapping paper, wallpaper or any other printed material that you might be able to work with or be willing to share with others. You can bring foliage, flowers or leaves you’d like to work with if that is of interest to you.

    About your tutors

Ursula: Gelatin plate printing is a wonderful way to play with printmaking at home with relative ease. The softness of the gelatin plates allows you to capture and print great detail and the results are impressive. With a background in design and an obsession with colour, gel plate printing allows me to play with these elements!

Ashley Ruth: Ashley Ruth lives and breathes art, taking her travel-size watercolour and mixed media supplies with her everywhere she goes - no exaggeration! She has developed her own unique style of watercolour and illustration and creates art every day, primarily through visual journaling.  A gifted teacher, she will guide you through the creative process in an enabling and encouraging manner so therapeutic you won't want class to end.
