    Description

Think Talk: A Māori whānau perspective of assisted dying in Aotearoa New Zealand

    Tuesday 12 August  7:30 PM - 8:30 PM

In this talk Tess shares some early findings from her HRC funded ‘Waerea study’ on Māori experiences of Assisted Dying. Her team used Kaupapa Māori research methods to explore experiences of accessing and using assisted dying services. The End of Life Choices Act (2019) provides a new end-of-life option for New Zealanders living with incurable illness. However, without appropriate information and navigational support to guide and prepare whānau, the Act can create further inequities for Māori. Findings highlight Indigenous communities are unaware of assisted dying and the strict eligibility criteria. Individuals who utilised the Act used their mana motuhake (autonomy and independence) to seek information and access the Act.
