    Love plants? Have a favourite you want to sketch? This workshop is an introduction to plant illustrations and is ideal for anyone interested in drawing and painting the botanical world. The course is held onsite at Selwyn Community Education both day. Bring your own materials. More information below course dates.

    Description

    After a brief look at the history and contemporary development of botanical illustration, some basic plant anatomy will be explored. Flower structures and leaf shapes will be examined with the 'naked eye' as well as under a microscope. Exercises on observational drawing will be set, encouraging you to experiment with a range of drawing tools, such as pencils, ink, pens and water colours.

    Expected learning outcomes

    • discuss the development of botanical illustration
    • dissect and identify flower parts
    • sketch plants with confidence using a variety of media

    On Saturday, will focus on techniques using graphite and ink. We won't use colour pencils this time. On Sunday we'll spend time with watercolour paints and colour work.

    Who should attend?

    Botanists, students, anyone keen on gardening, artists looking for a new form of expression.

    Materials to bring

    A materials list will be sent upon enrolment and will include the following:

    • Watercolour paints - preferably artists quality but Winsor & Newton or Cotman will be ok – available in individual tubes. You should have a warm (W) and a cool (C) colour of each of the primary colours. For example, yellows: Winsor Yellow (W) and and Winsor Lemon (C). For example, blues: French Ultramarine (W), Phthalo Blue or Windor blue (green shade) (C). For example reds: Permanent Rose (C), Winsor Red (W)
    • Paper -1 sheet of 300gsm watercolour paper HP (smooth) - Hahnemeulle Harmony 300gsm HP or Fabriabno Designo 300gsm HP
    • 1 packet of A4 Stella Multi Matt paper.
    • A5 or A4 sketchbook for note taking and sketching
    • Cartridge paper A1 sheet x 1
    • Pen - 1 fibre tip pen (the best is Staedtler Pigment Liner) 0.05mm - or similar.
    • Bottle of black Indian ink.
    • 1 dip pen nib (Hunt 512 or 513 - fine) and nib holder.
    • Fine embossing tool or empty ballpoint pen/thin crochet/knitting/darning needle
    • Brushes – soft, round, at least 1 x very fine (0000), 1 x size 3 or 4, 1 x size 6.
    • Liquid masking fluid (Pebeo brand is cheapest and best).
    • Pencils: a variety sich as 2H, HB, B, 2B
    • Erasers - plastic eraser and putty or kneadable rubber.
    • Scalpel or small craft knife.
    • Small cutting board.
    • Palette - white dinner plate is ideal
    • Rags/kitchen roll
    • Magnifying glass
    • Desk lamp (optional but handy)
    • Jam jars or similar x 2 for water
