    Description

    Travel back through time for this four part historical overview of Ancient Greece. This informative and captivating course will cover four periods of Ancient Greek history with a focus on Athens including early Greece (1600-600 BC), the Archaic period, the Classical period and the Hellenistic Period. You will gain a broad knowledge of the major events and leaders that shaped ancient Athenian history, as well as an understanding of the most famous dramas from the Classical period. Join historian Miriam Bissett as she takes you on a journey looking at art, religion and literature of Ancient Greece, and how these have influenced today’s world. This course is suitable for anyone interested in Ancient Greek history who have little to no prior knowledge. 


    Course outline

    • Session 1 ‘Beginnings’: 3000-600 BC: the Minoans and Mycenaeans, major events (Troy), Greek gods, the beginning of Greek religion and culture
    • Session 2 ‘Rise of Democracy’: 600-480 BC: the leaders, their creation of democracy, the art, the origins of drama, the Persian wars
    • Session 3 ‘The Golden Age’: 480-404 BC: Athens’ great leaders, unmatched drama, unsurpassed architecture, philosophical quandaries, the Peloponnesian War
    • Session 4 ‘The Great and the Fall’: 336-31 BC: Alexander the Great, Hellenistic art, similarities and differences between Greek society and our society today

    Expected learning outcomes

    • A broad knowledge of the major events and leaders that shaped ancient Athenian history
    • An understanding of the most famous dramas from the Classical period
    • The ability to differentiate between and appreciate the different art and architectural styles found in Athens
    • Gain a basic understanding of the religions, philosophies and social issues of the ancient Athenian people
    • A clearer perspective of how the past shapes the present

    Who should attend?

    Those interested in gaining an overview of Greek history and culture who have little to no prior knowledge of this subject.
