Beat boredom this school holidays while doing something meaningful in our 5-day programme to inspire and engage kids 8 - 12 years. Get Real provides fun ways for kids to understand relevant social topics and enjoy making positive changes in the world and in the lives of others.
Today's cause: Planting for Pollinators
Today's programme will kick off with an inspirational talk (speaker to be advised).
Following our inspirational speaker, Sarah Robinson of Little Ferns (https://littleferns.co.nz/) will lead the children in a series of activities to discover how to attract helpful pollinators into your garden. We’ll visit Sunhill Garden Centre (a 15 min walk away) for a fun plant identification challenge. We’ll play a game to help them understand the process and importance of pollination. Children will be able to create their own mini bamboo bee hotel, organic pest spray and wild flower seed packet to take home. Later in the day, Kimberley from Let's Make it Green will run a workshop teaching children how to make beeswax wraps. Everyone will take home one of these useful kitchen aids and an appreciation of the need to minimise single-use plastics in our environment.
This programme is a collaboration between Selwyn Community Education and GetReal (for more information contact GetReal at email: nz.getreal@gmail.com or via their website www.getreal.org.nz)
