    Description

Come and learn the beautiful Japanese art of Sashiko Stitching with a New Zealand flavour. You will leave the course having embroidered a cushion cover, and with the skills to repair worn clothes giving them an extended life. This workshop is designed for those new to sewing, and will teach fundamental machine and hand sewing skills with embroidered design.   Once your hand sewing is complete, you will use the sewing machines to make up your cushion.

Not only is Sashiko Stitching a wonderful way to relax, but can be used to visibly repair old and worn clothes, giving them an extended life, and a whole new look. Check out this online article for inspiration.

    Expected learning outcomes

    In this class, you'll learn:

    • how to thread and use a sewing machine
    • embroidery in the sashiko style
    • helpful tips about design, sacred geometry and construction

    What to bring

All materials will be provided and you'll take home your completed cushion cover. Our sewing rooms is equipped with domestic Bernina sewing machines which are available for you to use during class. You may prefer to bring your own machine to get familiar with its operation. For further information, please call the office on 5219623. There are scissors (both fabric and paper), measuring tapes etc in the sewing room to use during class, but we recommend you bring your own kit as follows: tailors chalk or fabric marking pen, tape measure, pins, fabric scissors, small scissors or snips, unpicker/stitch remover, your own metal bobbin to fit a Bernina machine. This will make things easier for you. Bring your lunch. We'll provide tea and coffee in the staffroom for breaks.

    Testimonials

    October 2020:

"The course was wonderful. A good look at the basics of the craft. Well explained with easy to follow instructions. The tutor was friendly and knowledgeable."

"I learnt enough to get me started on my own journey. Helpful tips given on how to do this. Karen came across very open, being her first sashiko class, and her next class will be another winner!"

"I enjoyed learning from the course and the sense of satisfaction at learning something new. Karen is so relaxed and professional, warm and welcoming - and talented."

"Firstly, thank you for running an excellent course. I felt Karen was excellent. She was straight about sashiko being new to her as well. With her background and obvious talent she led the group expertly. It was obvious she had done her research and presented sashiko in a way that highlighted it can be for all abilities. She was always positive and engaging. Also, Karen shares her knowledge and I felt you couldn't help but learn when in one of her classes. A natural teacher. I hope I have the opportunity to attend another one of her classes. I would love to build on that foundation and maybe run further sashiko classes. The whole thing was a really positive experience."

"I really liked the class size as it meant the tutor could get around to each person frequently and we could all engage with each other easily. The setting worked really well as it was a nicely lit room with plenty of spread to work. The teacher (also new to sashiko) was enthusiastic and very engaging."

"Enjoyed how Karen showed us how to do it and then let us experiment and add our own creative touch."
