    Description

    This course offers an introduction to key European art movements and periods in history including Renaissance art, Neoclassicism, Impressionism and Surrealism.  Each session covers how to look at and interpret significant artworks by well-known artists such as Michaelangelo, Rubens, Van Gogh and Dali. We will look at a range of artworks including paintings, architecture and sculpture. This course also explores the social and historical contexts associated with the artworks.

    Who should attend?

    Anyone who is interested in learning about the history and art of Europe. This course will also appeal to those who have travelled, or are thinking of travelling, to Florence, Paris, Vienna and other great cities of art in Europe.

    Expected learning outcomes

    • Know how to recognise and discuss key features of artworks
    • Understand the characteristics associated with major art movements and periods
    • Understand the broader social and historical influence on art, and how art in turn influences society
    • Develop an awareness of the richness of visual culture in European history
