    Description

Be guided by Mexican artist, Anna-Maria Bribiesca, and create your own beautiful Mexican inspired wooden cross. As a Mayan symbol, the cross represents the four directions of the wind, the energies that come from the heart, which are essential to growing crops.

The cross was significant in pre-colonial culture before the Spaniards introduced its Catholic meaning. As a Mayan symbol, the cross represents the four directions of the wind, the energies that come from the heart, which are essential to growing crops. The worship of the cross among Mexicans is closely connected with human sacrifices and this correlates with the cult of the sun god in the old world.

    Expected learning outcomes

    • Learn how to prep 3-d hard material for wet media
    • Learn how to research and plan your composition for your cross
    • Learn how to refine and resolve issues of drawing and painting
    • Learn how to apply the above to achieve a painted cross

On the first day, you'll prepare the wooden cross, research ideas and complete some thumb nail sketches, prepare a template plan of your artwork, and resolve the colour composition of your piece.

On the second day, you'll paint and varnish your cross.

    What to bring?

Your lunch (we'll provide tea and coffee). Bring an apron and a hairdryer if you have one (to speed up drying times). Bring your phone or some printed materials as reference for patterns, motifs or imagery you would like to incorporate on your cross. Flowers are a common theme in Mexican art. You may prefer to incorporate ideas from your own culture. Visit pinterest.nz for inspiration, or be guided by Anna-Maria on the day. Your course fee includes the wooden cross, and all other materials.
