    An introduction to jewellery-making with Phillipa Gee. Through making a wire ring and a flat ring using copper, you'll gain familiarity with jewellery making tools and processes. Held offsite in Pt Chevalier.

    Description

    We will cover:

    • Discussing the tools and equipment used to make jewellery
    • How to make a copper ring to the correct size using sawing, bending, soldering and filing.
    • Applying a decorative surface to metal
    • Using silver to make a ring and/ other jewellery pieces
    • Starting to consider design elements and how jewellery fits on the body

    All equipment, tools and some metal (copper) will be supplied by the tutor. Should you choose to work with silver, you can buy this as an extra material directly from the tutor.

    Expected learning outcomes

    • Understand the attributes of metal, and the techniques needed to make jewellery
    • Use a gas torch to solder copper and silver
    • Complete the steps required to make a ring to the correct size
    • Become familiar with the tools and equipment associated with jewellery making

    Who should attend?

    Beginners interested in learning a little about making jewellery.

    What to bring

    For weekend courses, bring your lunch. For all courses, long hair must be tied back and wear closed in shoes (health and safety requirements). Safety googles are provided. All materials are provided to make a wire ring and a flat ring in copper.

    About your tutor, Phillipa Gee

    I am a jewellery designer working with a range of materials and techniques, supplying galleries throughout New Zealand.  I enjoy passing the skills I have on to others.  The studio I work from is set up for teaching so I’m looking forward to utilizing this space.
