    During the course the girls will be taught basic physical and verbal techniques, reinforce assertion and boundary setting skills, and appropriate information about issues of abuse for girls.

    Description

    This fun course is designed for girls aged 11 - 13 years of age to teach physical and verbal techniques, boundary setting, and how to assert oneself. The instructor will also share information to strengthen the girls' knowledge of issues of abuse for girls. Read below for details of content.

    Course content

    Physical techniques:

    • Different kicks
    • Different punches
    • Vulnerable points
    • Natural weapons
    • Basic ground defences

    During the course the girls will also have discussions around:

    • Instinct
    • Body language
    • What inappropriate touching is and strategies to deal with it
    • Secrets
    • Naming body parts

    About your tutor, Julie

    Julie is an instructor with Kia Haumaru, a nationwide network of trained and accredited teachers of Empowerment Self Defence. Formerly known as the Women’s Self Defence Network – Wāhine Toa has been providing personal safety education to women, girls and members of the LGBTQIA+ community in Aotearoa for over 30 years. Their work is informed by mana wāhine and feminist understandings of both the causes and solutions to the problem of violence in Aotearoa.

    What to bring

    Your lunch and water bottle.  A pen for note-taking. Wear comfortable clothing.
