You will learn about how to start, with soil preparation, plant selection, propagation using permaculture ideas. This course is held offsite at Ellen's food forest in St Johns, Auckland.

    Description

    Learn how to turn your backyard into a productive garden full of healthy,  nutritious fruit, vegetables snd herbs for your family. You will learn about how to start, with soil preparation,  plant selection,  propagation using permaculture ideas.

    Expected learning outcomes

    • Visit a mature food forest in a suburban sized garden (in St Johns)
    • Learn how to get started with soil and garden bed preparation
    • Learn about plant selection (fruit trees, edible perennials, herbs and support plants)
    • Feel confident and inspired to start creating a more productive edible garden.

    Course outline

    • What is an edible garden?
    • Creating fertile soil
    • Introduction to organics and permaculture
    • Your garden site and the design process
    • Plant selection for the Auckland bioregion and where to source plants
    • Plant maintenance and propagation
    • The opportunity to take some plants home with you.

    Who should attend?

    Those needing knowledge or a confidence boost to get started with creating their own garden (small or large). Those interested in creating a more sustainable lifestyle in the city. Those interested in gardening in a way that is kind to nature.

    What to bring

    Wear walking shoes, boots or gumboots, bring your water bottle and a snack, pen and paper. This course is held offsite at Ellen's food forest in St Johns, Auckland.

    About your tutor, Ellen

    I am passionate about educating people about the joys of creating a productive, sustainable and beautiful edible garden in a suburban-sized backyard.  I am an experienced gardener who has completed a Permaculture Design Course, I hold weekly workshops in my garden, and I love to help people get started with creating their own edible garden.
