    Discover the rich history and vibrant culture of Italy in this engaging short course. Explore Italy's journey to unification, its 20-year Fascist dictatorship, the establishment of the Republic, and their lasting impacts on today's society. We will also take a look at some important women in history like Maria Montessori and delve into how modern history transformed iconic cities like Florence and Rome. Come and experience interactive learning that will bring the past to life!

    Expected learning outcomes

    • Know the key events and places that led to the unification of Italy, and how they impacted on cities like Florence
    • Be aware of the impact of the Fascist dictatorship on Italy's political and social structures
    • Understand the process of Italy becoming a Republic and its significance in contemporary society
    • Know a few Italian words and expressions related to Italian history.

    Course outline

    • The unification of Italy seen through Italian cities like Florence, Milan, Palermo, and Rome
    • Mussolini, the 20-year Fascist dictatorship, and their legacy
    • World War II: New Zealand and Maori battalions in Italy, and the Italian Resistance through grandma’s stories
    • The Italian Republic and women’s first vote.

    What to bring

    Just your lunch and a pen/paper for note-taking. Tea and coffee will be supplied.

    Who should attend?

    Italy lovers willing to know more about its history and anyone who wants an insight into Italian culture. No prior knowledge of Italian history or any knowledge of the Italian language are required as the course will be taught in English.
