    If you have someone you care about who has mental health challenges this course will help you gain an understanding of what is going on for them and how to communicate and support that person.

    Description

    Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) course fee subsidy

    This course offers a course fee subsidy through funding from the TEC for:  

    • NZ citizens;
    • Those who hold a residency-class visa;
    • Individuals granted refugee status;
    • In some cases spouses of NZ citizens and permanent migrants may also qualify - please contact the office to enquire.

    Conditions:

    • Registrants must be aged 16 years or older.
    • Registrants must not be currently enrolled at a secondary school.
    • You should attend at least 80% of your classes to qualify for a fee subsidy.
    • We need to collect extra information such as age, ethnicity, educational achievement and gender for statistical purposes.
    • You must provide evidence of NZ citizenship, residency or refugee status. 

    If you are unable to meet these conditions, please contact the office to discuss your situation. The subsidised course fee is $30.

    About the course

    This course is tailored for individuals who support loved ones facing mental health challenges. Its goal is to enhance understanding of both the mental health experiences of those they care for and the unique challenges faced by caregivers. Participants will learn how to respond effectively in times of crisis, improve communication with their loved ones, and access appropriate support. Ultimately, the course provides valuable resources to not only help those they care for but also to empower and support the caregivers themselves during difficult times.

    Expected learning outcomes

    • Gain an understanding of mental health basics and common disorders.
    • Develop effective communication techniques for supporting individuals and learn how to manage crises.
    • Recognise the broader effects of mental health challenges on both individuals and their support networks, and learn strategies to reduce these impacts.
    • Learn and apply self-care strategies to maintain long-term well-being as a caregiver.

    Course outline

    Session 1: Understanding Mental Health and Crisis Response

    • Common mental health concerns;
    • Overview of mental health conditions as outlined in the DSM-5;
    • Crisis action: recognising warning signs, knowing who to contact, and understanding the steps to take.

    Session 2: The Emotional Impact of Mental Health Challenges

    • Exploring how diagnosis, stigma, and grief affect the individual and their support network.

    Session 3: Providing Effective Support

    • What good support looks like for both you and the person you're supporting;
    • Where to access professional resources and services;
    • How to communicate effectively to support others.

    Session 4: Self-Care and Wellbeing

    • The importance of connection, physical health, mental health, and finding meaning in caregiving;
    • Grounding and breathing exercises for stress relief;
    • How to care for yourself while caring for others;
    • Accessing support for your own well-being.

    Who should attend?

    This course is ideal for family members, friends, and anyone motivated to make a positive difference in the lives of those facing mental health challenges. Whether they’re new to the topic or seeking to deepen their understanding, this course will provide insights and practical tools for effective support.

    I’m a counsellor (Member of New Zealand of Association of Counsellors. I’ve had experiences supporting people through private practice, and Lifeline. I have also had personal experience of helping others with mental health issues.
