About the course

Planning a trip to Japan, or simply want to understand Japan a little better? Japan has many unique customs and everyday habits that can be surprising or confusing for visitors. This fun and relaxed course will help you discover what makes Japan special and make your next trip even more enjoyable! We’ll learn some simple Japanese for travelling, explore Japanese etiquette and dining manners, and discover the different types of Japanese restaurants. We’ll also have fun with quizzes, activities and a taste of Japanese tea ceremony.

This course is great for you if you’d like to:

• learn useful Japanese phrases for travelling

• understand Japanese customs and etiquette

• feel more confident when eating out in Japan

• discover different types of Japanese restaurants

• learn more about Japanese food and dining manners

• experience a little Japanese tea ceremony

• make your next trip to Japan more fun and memorable!

What to bring

Your lunch and pen and paper for note-taking. We'll supply tea and coffee.

About your tutor

I’ve lived in New Zealand for over 28 years and have had quite a varied career, from working as a secretary and legal administrator to being a wedding MC and Japanese narrator. These days, I teach Japanese and Japanese cooking at a community centre and also offer private Japanese lessons. I also work as a Japanese Language Consultant and Language Class Assistant at a public high school in Auckland. I’m actively involved in the Japanese community in Auckland and serve on the committee of the Japanese Society of Auckland. Through my work and community involvement, I’ve made many connections within the Japanese community and have a good understanding of both Japanese and Kiwi culture.

Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) course fee subsidy

This course offers a course fee subsidy through funding from the TEC for:  

• NZ citizens;
• Those who hold a residency-class visa;
• Individuals granted refugee status;
• In some cases spouses of NZ citizens and permanent migrants may also qualify - please contact the office to enquire.

Conditions:

• Registrants must be aged 16 years or older.
• Registrants must not be currently enrolled at a secondary school.
• You should attend at least 80% of your classes to qualify for a fee subsidy.
• We need to collect extra information such as age, ethnicity, educational achievement and gender for statistical purposes.
• You must provide evidence of NZ citizenship, residency or refugee status.
