    Description

Delve into the fascinating history of collage and its evolution over the past 150 years, creating your own personal collages throughout the course including portraiture, landscapes and surrealism. This course runs over six evenings.

This course will explore how collage has been used in various forms, from portraiture to surrealism, and how artists have incorporated personal interpretation and mixed media techniques to create dynamic, meaningful works.

    Course outline

    • Week 1: Introduction to collage and Its history: Discover the origins and evolution of collage, tracing its development from early pioneers to contemporary artists. Learn how this medium has become an essential tool in artistic expression over the last 150 years. Begin your self portrait!
    • Week 2: Collage in portraiture: Explore how collage has been used to create striking, unconventional portraits. Experiment with combining materials like magazine scraps and personal ephemera to reinterpret facial features and identities.
    • Week 3: Collage in landscape art: Learn how collage has transformed the depiction of landscapes, from realistic scenes to abstract and conceptual representations. Use textures, colours, and materials to convey the essence of nature.
    • Week 4: Surrealism and collage: Delve into the surrealist movement and its revolutionary approach to collage. Understand how artists like Max Ernst and Salvador Dalí used collage to create dreamlike, fantastical worlds and explore your own imagination.
    • Week 5: Personal interpretation in collage: Embrace your unique artistic vision as you create a piece of collage art based on your personal experiences, ideas, or emotions. Learn how to incorporate personal objects and meaningful scraps into your work.
    • Week 6: Scrapbooking and final project: Learn the art of scrapbooking and how it connects to the larger history of collage. Bring together your techniques from previous weeks to create a final collage project that showcases your style and interpretation of the medium.

By the end of the course, you will have a deeper understanding of the rich history of collage and how to use mixed media to express your creative ideas, from traditional portraiture and landscape to surrealist visions and personal storytelling.
