    Description

Think Talk: Tread carefully in the media minefield: Disinformation and the need for trusted sources.

    Tuesday 24 June  7:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Disinformation – the deliberate dissemination of falsehoods – has reached levels of sophistication that make detection difficult and even harder to refute. Dr Gavin Ellis, a former editor who is an honorary research fellow at Koi Tū: The Centre for Informed Futures, will explain how disinformation works, why it can be highly effective, and how journalism must provide the trusted sources of verified information that can combat it.

About Dr Gavin Ellis, Honorary research fellow in Koi Tū: The Centre for Informed Futures at the University of Auckland

Gavin is a media consultant, commentator and researcher with more than five decades of experience in news media. A former editor-in-chief of the New Zealand Herald, he lectured on media, communications, and propaganda at the University of Auckland for a decade.

He was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2015 for services to journalism. In 2005 he was recipient of the British Commonwealth Astor Press Freedom Award. Under his editorial direction, the New Zealand Herald was awarded New Zealand Newspaper of the Year three times, the Commonwealth Newspaper of the Year, and Pacific Area Newspaper of the Year.

He is the author of three books and numerous research papers including a series on the Christchurch mosque attacks. In May 2024, Koi Tū published his paper that examined the state of journalism in New Zealand and how it can be sustained. The title of the paper was If not journalists, then who?

Please register for this talk so we can plan seating for the expected numbers. A small donation on arrival at the door is appreciated.
