We will learn about Cubist compositional principles, and practice making a cubist still life, a cubist portrait and a cubist abstract painting.
Cubism is about breaking reality into simple geometric shapes (cubes, cylinders, cones, and spheres) and then putting them back together in surprising ways to reveal multiple perspectives at once. Come and learn to paint with experienced artist and teacher EK, in the cubist style of painting.
Cubism shook up the art world around 1907–08, thanks to Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Instead of painting things the way we usually see them, they decided to show different angles of the same object or figure all at once. The result was paintings that look fragmented and abstract.
In this practical, hands-on course, we will dive into the core principles of Cubism and discover how this revolutionary approach reshaped the way artists see and represent the world. With a series of guided drawing and painting exercises we will explore how objects are distilled into simple geometric forms, helping us understand their underlying structure and properties. We will learn how artists often show a single subject from multiple viewpoints at the same time, giving their work a layered, dynamic quality that challenges the way we normally perceive reality. Further in the course, we will bridge the gap between cubism and abstraction while working on a series of abstract exercises with a strong cubist influence. Over the eight weeks we will complete studies in cubist still life, portraiture, landscape and pure abstraction.
