Think Talk: Counteracting Global Autocracy
Tuesday 19 May 7:30 PM - 8:30 PM
The rise of authoritarian movements around the world presents an accelerating illiberal trend in international affairs. Rapidly modernising China and India are at the vanguard of this phenomenon. And as other major world powers also adopt such values, authoritarianism is now being normalised across the world.
Join Dr Chris Ogden as he asks: does the rise of these movements signal the demise of Western democracy and the dawn of an authoritarian era in world politics? And if so, what can we do to counter it?
Chris Ogden is an associate professor and programme director of Global Studies at the University of Auckland. His specialist knowledge concerns shifting world orders, global authoritarianism, the Asian Century, great power politics, Hindu nationalism, digital repression and the global rise of India and China.
