    Think Talk: Our Demography Keeps Changing: What Will Aotearoa New Zealand Look Like in the Future?

    Tuesday 23 June  7:30 PM - 8:30 PM

    Distinguished Professor Emeritus Paul Spoonley will discuss the latest data on how New Zealand is changing – we are getting older, fertility is declining (significantly), more people are living in the top half of the North Island – and especially Auckland – while our cultural diversity is changing much faster than we previously thought. This talk will focus on some of the major changes that are occurring along and paint a picture of the future New Zealand.

    About Professor Emeritus, Paul Spoonley MA MSc PhD ONZM FRSNZ 

    Distinguished Professor Paul Spoonley was, until 2019, the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Massey University. He retired from Massey University in April, 2021. He is the author or editor of 28 books, the most recent being The “New” New Zealand. Facing Demographic Disruption (2020, new edition, 2021). He is one of the editors of a forthcoming book on the far right in New Zealand. He was a Programme Leader of a research programme on the impacts of immigration and diversity on Aotearoa (2014-2021). He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand in 2011 and was a Fulbright Senior Scholar at the University of California Berkeley in 2010. Since 2013, he has been a Visiting Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity in Göttingen, Germany. He is a Fellow of the Auckland Museum and Research Affiliate of Koi Tū : The Centre for Informed Futures at the University of Auckland.
