    Home Barista for Beginners

    Through a combination of online learning and hands-on practice, learn about espresso and learn to make popular espresso coffees. A course fee subsidy applies for permanent residents of NZ (conditions apply).

    Description

    This is blended-learning course using a combination of online video tutorials and hands-on practice using an espresso machine. You will receive an email with a link to the online learning within the week of the course.

    Course Fee Subsidy

    This course offers a course fee subsidy through funding from the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) for NZ citizen and permanent migrant adults, their partners on work visas or visitor visas, and refugees. To qualify, registrants should be over the age of 16 years and not currently enrolled in a secondary school. We need to collect extra information such as age, ethnicity, educational achievement and gender for statistical purposes. You must also provide evidence of NZ citizenship, residency or refugee status if requested. A condition of accepting a course fee subsidy is that you commit to at least 80% attendance of your course.

    Course outline

    Learn coffee fundamentals including:

    • What is espresso?
    • Processing and roasting coffee beans
    • Storing coffee beans
    • Anatomy of a coffee machine
    • Grinding and dosing espresso coffee
    • Extracting the perfect espresso shot
    • Understanding the different types of milk
    • Stretching and texturing milk
    • Splitting milk
    • Pouring milk to make espresso drinks
    • Top tips for espresso coffee service
    • Cleaning an espresso machine

    You'll learn about different espresso coffee drinks and how to make:

    • an espresso
    • a long black
    • a macchiato (both long and short)
    • a latte
    • a piccolo latte
    • a flat white
    • a cappuccino
    • a mocha
    • an iced coffee

    At the conclusion of this course the tutor will explain to you about the final online aspect where, once completed, you'll then earn a certificate endorsed by the Institute of Hospitality. This course does not earn NCEA credits.

    What to bring

    All ingredients ($15) are included within the course fee.  As this course runs over the lunch-hour, bring a sandwich or similar for lunch.  If you have a small portable espresso machine you are interested to practice with, please email your tutor about the possibility of bringing it along.
