Term 4 2024 Learning about making art through artists - SHADOWS

In Term 4 the focus is on shadows. We will look at Plato’s Allegory of the Cave and South African artist William Kentridge. Students will learn about the history of shadow puppetry and make their own shadow puppets, shadow drawings and sculptures inspired by these. Students are taught to think creatively, problem solve, work collaboratively and independently and access the right/creative side of their brains. Students will be exposed to a range of materials and techniques including drawing in various media, cyanotypes and sculpture.

General: Robyn talks to students about the local art scene. Where possible, Robyn work on projects that take the group outside of the studio to work en plein air. Art materials are included in the enrolment fee. For children 6-14 years old. The earlier session has mostly students in the 6 - 10 year range. Robyn will teach to a wider range of ages on the later session.

    Some topics from previous terms:

    Learning about drawing
This eight week course introduces young art students to fine art drawing (as opposed to craft) where the student is exposed to a wide range of mediums including lead pencils, ink, charcoal, eraser, pastel and pen. The classes are practical and fun, whilst still teaching art in a disciplined and nurturing environment. Students doodle, draw from observation, from photographic reference, as a preliminary sketch and as an end in itself. Emphasis is placed on thinking visually, developing looking skills and teaching the basic principles of art, such as line, tone and composition. Students are trained to look and re-look, to draw the thing itself, the space around/ negative space, using a continuous line, without looking at their page/ blind drawing until their eyes are trained and they see the thing they are drawing and not an idea of it. Braveness is needed to make a drawing. One has to be prepared for failure, and this may be public, the trick is to view these attempts as learning and accumulate knowledge into a more determined effort. Students are engaged through object-based learning, which develops critical-thinking skills and fosters an appreciation for the visual arts. There is no substitute for access to original works of art in achieving this goal and I encourage my students to visit galleries and view original art works. I teach students about the history of art and contemporary art through their practice and teach them to think creatively, problem solve, and to work collaboratively and independently.

Learning about making art through artists - Ancient Greek Sculptures
This three-week course introduces young art students to Ancient Greek Sculpture. Students will draw, paint and sculpt their own head (human or animal) inspired by a Greek masterpiece.

Learning about making art through artists - People
In Term 3 the focus is on the figure and the portrait. We will look at various famous artists, both international and local and make artworks inspired by them -  From Picasso and Giacometti to Robin White and Lissy Cole. Students will learn about the history of art and contemporary art in a practical class. They are taught to think creatively, problem solve, work collaboratively and independently and access the right/creative side of their brains. Students will be exposed to a range of materials and techniques including drawing in various media, painting, printmaking and sculpture.

Learning about making art through artists - Beasts
In Term 4 the focus is on creatures big and small. We will look at various famous artists, both international and local and make artworks inspired by them - from Dürer and Bourgeois to Fiona Pardington and traditional Māori carvers. Students will learn about the history of art and contemporary art in a practical class. They are taught to think creatively, problem solve, work collaboratively and independently and access the right/creative side of their brains. Students will be exposed to a range of materials and techniques including drawing in various media, painting, printmaking and sculpture.
