    Description

Would you like to start learning a new language?  Why not Spanish, spoken on four continents and more than 20 countries.  Come to join us in this fantastic introduction and enter the world of Spanish culture. This is an introductory level course.  Follow-on courses levels 2 - 4.5 are also available. Conversation Level 5 is a higher level class for those who wish to develop fluency in Spanish. We also offer Spanish for Travellers courses in weekend or weeknight formats. These focus on the language of travel as this Spanish Beginners course does not teach travel vocabulary and phraseology.

Note that this course requires some home study as well as classroom sessions.

    Course outline

During this course, you will study:

    • Greeting people and saying good-bye
    • Giving your name and asking others' names
    • Learn about differences in greetings in Latin America and Spain
    • Professions and occupations
    • Nationalities and languages you speak
    • Calendar, numbers, days of week and months
    • Time - asking the time
    • Household matters
    • Family and describing them

    Expected learning outcomes

On completion of this course we expect that you will be able to speak some basic Spanish, remember some essential vocab, be starting to learn some simple grammar, have the basics of pronunciation, and have some idea of Spanish culture and traditions. The amount of revision undertaken between classes can have a large influence on the final outcome for individuals. Each week, the course will build upon itself. We ask students to revise material between classes. In addition, a short homework exercise is usually set. We encourage you to set up a Duolingo Spanish account (www.duolingo.com) on your computer or smartphone and practise for 10 minutes daily. Visit our blog for tips and tricks on improving your Spanish language learning.

Our Spanish tutors create a fun and lively atmosphere in an informal classroom setting.

    • 'Hi there, just a quick note to say thanks to Sergio for being such a fantastic Spanish teacher. His personality and presentation style made his classes really enjoyable. He is so engaged and interested in his students learning. I attended a Spanish night class at XXXX Term 1 which was such a yawn, with the teacher just running through the motions it was so refreshing to be part of Sergios class. He is definitely a cut above other teachers. Thanks. Juliet'

    • 'I thoroughly enjoyed Spanish 1 with Sergio. I found him to be a very effective educator and his classes were both informative, supportive and fun. Sergio's passion for his language, interactive class structure and detailed resources (such as his comprehensive course workbook) made Spanish One a class I will recommend highly to prospective Spanish speakers in future. I found myself learning a lot more than I have done on other introductory Spanish courses previously. Thanks, Adam'
    • 'Excellent teaching style. Enjoyed the 8 week language and exercise booklet with all its colourful pictures and words. The booklet gave me a preview of topics to be covered and assisted me to prepare for the following weeks lesson. Over the 8 weeks my confidence is increasing when speaking Spanish to others. Sergio is very passionate for us to speak Spanish so that others will understand us and he will correct us immediately - I like that, to learn well from the start. I look foward to continuing learning Spanish with Maestro Sergio! Tania'

    • 'Hi there, I've just finished my Level 1 Spanish Course with Sergio and I wanted to get in touch because you guys need to know what a fantastic teacher he is. Sergio is kind, patient, funny and clear - I enjoyed his classes far more than I feel like any student should enjoy class! His gentle encouragement and easy, comfortable style really boosted the confidence of almost every student in the class, with all of us improving to the point of comfortably standing in front of the class and speaking.  Please keep him on board because I'd really like to do Level 2 Spanish next year, and would like him as my teacher. Furthermore, I'd like to thank Selwyn College very much for the great classes you run - it's been a pleasure and I'd certainly recommend your classes to anyone wanting to learn a new skill.  Thanks again! Kendal'
