    Would you like to learn Korean in a no-stress, exciting environment? This course is designed for beginners who are interested in Korean culture and wish to start learning the basics of Korean language. Course fee $50 or $155.

    Description

    Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) course fee subsidy

    This course offers a course fee subsidy through funding from the TEC for:  

    • NZ citizens;
    • Those who hold a residency-class visa;
    • Individuals granted refugee status;
    • In some cases spouses of NZ citizens and permanent migrants may also qualify - please contact the office to enquire.

    Conditions:

    • Registrants must be aged 16 years or older.
    • Registrants must not be currently enrolled at a secondary school.
    • You should attend at least 80% of your classes to qualify for a fee subsidy.
    • We need to collect extra information such as age, ethnicity, educational achievement and gender for statistical purposes.
    • You must provide evidence of NZ citizenship, residency or refugee status .

    If you are unable to meet these conditions, please contact the office to discuss your situation. The subsidised course fee is $50.

    About the course

    Korean language for beginners aims to introduce true beginners of the Korean language to basic spoken and written skills in modern Korean. Students will begin to learn Hangul (the Korean alphabet) vowels, and consonants, and spelling. Cecilia will also incorporate relevant cultural information to help students understand the context of the language.

    This introductory level course will cover:

    • The Korean alphabet 
    • Reading simple words  
    • Basic greetings, honorific speech 
    • Basic sentences : statement using the verb To Be, questions and answers with yes and no
    • How to introduce  yourself

    Cecilia's Korean Language programme:

    • Korean Beginners 1 (runs over eight classes)
    • Korean Beginners 2 (runs over eight classes). This course is suitable for those who may already know a little Korean.
    • Korean Level 3 (runs over sixteen classes/two terms)
    • Korean Level 4 (runs over sixteen classes/two terms)

    If you already speak some Korean, please contact the office and we'll put you in touch with Cecilia to assess which class is best suited to your level of Korean.

    About your tutor

    Cecilia Kim is a Korean-qualified teacher who has lived in New Zealand for more than 20 years. Teaching is her passion. As well as language, Cecilia teaches Korean cooking courses at Selwyn Community Education. Her warm and humorous teaching style has earned her a devoted following. Cecilia loves to share the history, culture and food of her homeland. A  lifelong learner, Cecilia is currently undertaking formal studies to further her teaching of Korean as a second language. Cecilia's hobbies including cooking, karaoke, gardening, and painting.
