Waiata Māori
Wind down by learning waiata Māori from the traditional sort to those of Rob Ruha. At the pace of the class we will learn the kupu (words), the rangi (tune and harmonies) and actions for waiata-a-ringa (action songs). A great way to destress and socialise. No musical experience required. Course fee $30 or $120.

Description
Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) course fee subsidy
This course offers a course fee subsidy through funding from the TEC for:
- NZ citizens;
- Those who hold a residency-class visa;
- Individuals granted refugee status;
- In some cases spouses of NZ citizens and permanent migrants may also qualify - please contact the office to enquire.
Conditions:
- Registrants must be aged 16 years or older.
- Registrants must not be currently enrolled at a secondary school.
- You should attend at least 80% of your classes to qualify for a fee subsidy.
- We need to collect extra information such as age, ethnicity, educational achievement and gender for statistical purposes.
- You must provide evidence of NZ citizenship, residency or refugee status .
If you are unable to meet these conditions, please contact the office to discuss your situation. The subsidised course fee is $30.
About the course
Haere mai, waiata mai! Each term we focus on a selection of waiata Māori, including traditional and contemporary pieces. At the pace of the class we will learn the kupu (words), the rangi (tune and harmonies) and the actions for waiata-ā-ringa (action songs).
Let waiata Māori be your window to Māori language, pūrākau (stories) and histories. It’s also a great way to decompress, connect and keep the brain active. No musical experience required.
About your tutor, Eda
Eda is a Chinese Tangata Tiriti who is passionate are about language revitalisation and bridging cultures. When Eda isn’t teaching, she’s a freelance journalist and editorial producer for The D*List, a disabled-led media and community organisation. She was a Pou Tiaki journalist at Stuff NZ, telling stories of te ao Māori and other underrepresented communities. She was also the co-writer and co-host ofĀku Hapa!,a TV show on Whakaata Māori that uses cooking as the waka for speaking te reo Māori in a fearless way. Eda is a graduate of Te Pīnakitanga ki te Reo Kairangi at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa.

I tapaina au e tōku iwi Hainihi ko Te Tamaiti o Tuarangi, ko 唐子遥. Anei ko Eda Tang e mihi atu nei.
It's my honour to lead the new rōpū waiata at Selwyn Community Education to help provide an access point into te reo Māori and tirohanga Māori. I am on my own reo Māori journey and I share the responsibility of all kaiako to pass down the mātauranga that waiata carry.
