Unlock the art of beautiful handwriting, in this beginner friendly calligraphy course! This is perfect for those with little or no experience, this workshop will guide you through the basics of creating elegant, expressive lettering using a broad edged pen and ink.

This class follows from my ‘Introduction to Calligraphy” workshop, a great ‘next step’, whether you're looking to enhance you handwriting, start a new creative hobby, this class is that perfect stepping stone on your calligraphic journey letterforms.

In this course you will learn the fundamentals of Calligraphy, getting to know your tool and use the pen as we work on three different lettering styles of lettering. Italic, Foundational Hand and Gothic letters. We will look at both the minuscule and majuscule - small and capital letters forms- of each of these hands, over the six week evenings.

Beginning with the basic letter forms we will learn to master the pen strokes and form simple beautiful lettering, and understand the idiosyncrasies of the ‘how’ of these strokes and forms.

You will receive exemplar sheets and notes of these three hands and begin on your calligraphic journey, into the fascinating world of lettering, creating letters and words with ease.

By the end of the course, you will have the skills and confidence to practise and then create your own calligraphic projects, personalised cards, quotations, meaningful phrases, and much more. You will be encouraged to begin your own personal project that will ensure the skills learned will further develop, gain consistency, discipline and come to an appreciation of the finer details that create great calligraphic lettering.

What to bring

Your course fee includes materials ($15) and you'll take home your own calligraphy pen. You don't need to bring anything to these classes.

About your tutor

Margaret Woollett, a Freelance Calligrapher and Lettering Artist, has been involved with lettering and calligraphy for more than 25 years, as a student, freelancer and teacher. She works from her Devonport studio taking classes, teaching at community centres and working freelance for a wide range of commercial clients.
